I have started the practice of giving a cash gift to a high school graduates, $100 for family or close friends, $50 for those not so close. I inherited from my dad a few silver coins, such as Walking Liberty silver dollars and JFK silver half dollars. I sew a little drawstring pouch to put the coin in, and give that, along with the check. That way, there is a little personal memento from me as well as the cash.
